Abstract

ABSTRACT
The Spatio- Temporal Analysis of the Expansion of Birnin Kebbi Town investigates the physical expansion of Birnin Kebbi town over a 30-year period. The research aimed to identify the extent of spatial expansion, the pattern and trend in the expansion of the town and its implication for sustainable urban development. Satellite imagery were acquired from LandSat 8 and LandSat 4-5 TM and analyzed using GIS tools in ArcGIS. Land Use Land Cover Change detection technique was used to identify the town as urban (built-up) area and determine its expansion over the study period. The study found that the land area of Birnin Kebbi Town has expanded from 22.058373(acre) in 1991 to 72.486175(acre) in 2021. Further, findings revealed that the town has maintained a steady wave of expansion from 19991, expanding at an average of 4.466% every ten years. This expansion is primarily driven by population increase, infrastructural development, and economic activities. The spatial changes have resulted in the loss of valuable agricultural land and environmental degradation, posing challenges for sustainable development.
