Knowledge and Factors Influencing Compliance to Environmental Sanitation Among Residents of Angwan Rogo Community Jos-North Metropolis

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Environmental Sanitation is a fundamental process that is a key public health intervention which is essential for social, economic and overall health development of communities. Objective; To find out the knowledge and factors to compliance to environmental sanitation among resident of Angwan Rogo Community Jos-North metropolis, Plateau State. Method; A descriptive survey, cros sectional study method of research was adopted in this study. Convenience sampling technique was employed in this study to select 240 respondents while Questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. Results; The findings of the study revealed that majority (96.1%) of the respondents knew what environmental sanitation meant. They also practiced environmental sanitation; and factors that enabled their compliance included literacy that is, education and awareness on environmental sanitation and adequate allocation of resources for environmental sanitation services. However, others had good knowledge of environmental sanitation but were unable to put that into practice due to impediment such as illiteracy, and lack of knowledge on the implications of non-compliance to environmental sanitation. Conclusion; it was concluded that a lot of attention is still required in the development of basic sanitation practice and also, in the promotion of strategies or intervention that influence behavioural change towards environmental sanitation especially in developing countries like Nigeria. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that there should be institutionalization of sound environmental sanitation consciousness as a life style, strict enforcement of environmental sanitation laws and penalizing defaulters so as to deter other citizens, creating enabling environment to facilitate behavioural change, advocating for increased budgetary allocation in favour of environmental sanitation at all tiers of Government, introduction and enforcement of the use of environment friendly packaging material, and encouragement of establishment of neighborhood environmental sanitation committees.
