Guidance and Counselling Service as a Determinant of Senior Secondary School Two (ii) Academic Performance in Ekiti State.

Abstract
Guidance and counseling services through teaching, advising, instructing, explaining, and opinion enables students to develop self-esteem and evaluate the societal challenges facing them, abilities and gradually develop their life’s goals. However, this study seek to fill this gap by looking into guidance and counselling service as a determinant of senior secondary school two (II) academic performance in Ekiti State. The research design adopted for this study was a survey design of the descriptive of type of research. The population of the study consist of senior secondary school students in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. The sample size for the study was one hundred (100) students. The research instrument used for this study was a self-structured questionnaire developed by the researcher. To ensure validity of the instrument, the draft of the questionnaire was presented to two (2) experts and the supervisor for face, content and construct validity. The questionnaire was administered to the respondents and were collected back immediately. The completed questionnaire was coded and analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study concluded that that guidance and counseling service are made available to secondary school students, senior secondary school student have free and proper access to guidance and counselling service, guidance and counselling service have influence on academic performance of senior secondary school students and finally, guidance and counselling service have influence on student study habit in senior secondary school in Ekiti State. Hence, the researcher recommended the following base on the conclusion drawn from the findings that schools in Ekiti State should ensure that adequate guidance and counseling services are provided to all students, especially those in Senior Secondary School II (SSS II), as this period is crucial in shaping their academic outcomes. It is vital that counseling services address both academic and personal challenges students face. Government and school management should ensure that school counselors receive continuous training to stay updated with the latest counseling techniques and educational strategies. The training should focus on areas such as career guidance, stress management, study skills, and emotional intelligence.
