Abstract
Although universally accepted, the majority of electronic calendars remain device-bound, i.e., users have to employ other methods or even keep paper calendars as a backup to digital ones. Google Calendar and Outlook improve organization but are device-dependent and do not have visibility in public spaces, while real-time synchronized physical calendars are unattainable.
To replace this gap, the project incorporated hardware and software modules: a DS1302 RTC for offline timekeeping on a Raspberry Pi 3B and a 7-inch touchscreen for interfacing with the user. The software includes a Python/Kivy front-end for the main application, an Express.js server, and a PostgreSQL database on Supabase for cloud storage and syncing between the calendar display and webpage. Development followed alpha testing for functionality and performance tests, and beta testing for user-centric feedback on usability and functionality.
Testing confirmed that the Smart Calendar System reached its goals: automatic refreshing of dates, real-time sync, and displays online event updates. Beta testers reported good responsiveness, uninterrupted syncing, Yoruba language support, and good offline strength.
This combination of a local physical device and cloud-based scheduling works well with shared spaces, homes, and institutions with the demands of supporting local languages and offline access. It extends existing solutions by providing an embedded, visible calendar with multi-device synchronization through standard web APIs and cloud storage.
