The Effect of Braille Reading and Listening Skills on the Academic Performance of Learners With Visual Impairment in Federal College of Education Special Oyo

Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to imestigate the effect of braille reading and listening skills
on the academic performance of learners with visual impairment in federal college
of education special Oyo. In this research work questlonnaire was adopted as an
instrument. this made up 50 respondents (50 students) which was selected from the
sampled schools. The questionnaire was administered during the school hours with the permission of the heads of the schools. The data collected through questionnaire was analyzed
using simple percentage distribution and chi-square (x^2) of the result
experimented was set to analyze the hypotheses, The table 4.1.1 shows that 50% of the
respondents were male while 50% were female. This is an indication that both genders
had a quite percentage of respondents. Likewise, table 4.1.2 shows that 54.0% of the respondents were between ages 20- 25 while 30.0% were between ages 26-30 and 12.0% of the
respondents were 31 - 35 years while 4.0% of the respondents were 36 years and above. This is
an indication that age groups were carried along in this
research. The table 4.1.3 shows that 32. 0% of the respondents are 100 level students, 40.0% of the respondents are 200 level students and 20.0% of the respondents are 300 level
students, while 8.0% of the respondents are 400 level. This is an indication that classes and
level of education was considered in this research. From the demographic
discussion above it was deduced that the 100 level students have the highest percentage of
age distribution while 200 level follows and 300 level have the lowest age distribution.
From the findings, it was discovered that: Braille reading/visual impairment, enumerated some
importance of Braille reading and writing to students with visual impairment, also Braille
reading and writing among students with visual impairment such as lack of
Braille materials in many schools, lack of Braille professionals in our schools among others, The
prevalence of visual impairnment in Nigerian context was briefly discussed,some causes of visual impairment were explained, the chapter identified and discussed some steps that can be
followed to prevent visual impairment such as contacting eye
specialist (ophthalmologists) when problems of vision are encountered.
