Effect of Senior Secondary School Student’s Attitude Toward Mathematics and Their Academic Performance: Case Study Nasarawa Local Government, Kano Sate Nigeria

Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the effect of attitude on mathematics performance among senior secondary school students in Nasarawa Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria. Mathematics was a fundamental subject essential for intellectual development and problem-solving; however, many students struggle due to negative perceptions and attitudes, which hinder their academic success. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised all senior secondary school students in Nasarawa Local Government Area. A total of 384 students were selected using a multistage sampling technique, which involved proportionate stratified sampling to ensure representation across different schools. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews with students and teachers from selected schools. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were employed to identify patterns and relationships between students' attitudes and their academic performance in mathematics. This study was validated through a rigorous process to ensure its credibility and reliability. It was reviewed by 3 experts in the field of mathematics education and research methodology. And it was also reviewed by the project supervisor, Dr. Surajo Isa Gaya, were they confirmed the study's alignment with academic standards. The research design, methodology, and data collection instruments were carefully evaluated for accuracy and relevance. A pilot study was conducted to test feasibility, and statistical techniques, including reliability testing using Cronbach’s Alpha, ensured data consistency. The findings were cross-verified with existing literature to strengthen validity. Overall, the study was deemed valid for assessing the effect of students' attitudes on mathematics performance. The findings reveal a strong correlation between students' attitudes and their achievement levels. Positive attitudes, fostered by effective teaching strategies, parental encouragement, and self-motivation, significantly enhance performance. Conversely, negative attitudes, often driven by fear, lack of interest, or ineffective teaching approaches, contribute to lower academic achievement.This study underscores the importance of fostering a supportive learning environment that cultivates positive attitudes toward mathematics. Based on the findings, recommendations were provided for educators, parents, and policymakers to implement strategies that enhance students’ engagement and overall performance in mathematics.
