Abstract
The study investigated effect of cognitive training programmes on executive
function skills in students with cognitive problems in Oyo Metropolis. Four
research questions and one hypothesis were raised to guide the researcher in the
study. Quasi-experimental research design was used as the research design,
purposive sampling techniques was used in selecting 20 JSS 2 students from
SPED International Secondary School as respondents for the study. The study
data were analyzed using frequency count and simple percentage (%) for
demographic information while mean and standard deviation is used to answer the
research questions while statistical tools of t-test was used to analyze the
responses to items of the research hypothesis. This instrument reliability was
measured using Cronbach’s Alpha (α) with 0.84 as the internal consistency. The
findings of the study revealed that revealed a significant impact of cognitive
training programs on the executive function skills of students with cognitive
problems (X= 3.43), it was also agreed that the improvement of cognitive training
programmes on working memory of students with cognitive problems is
significant (X= 3.83, also the findings revealed that the effectiveness of cognitive
training programmes on inhibitory control of students with cognitive problems is
significant (X= 3.95) and also there was significant relationship between cognitive
training programmes and executive function skills among students with cognitive
problems. It was concluded that cognitive training programs can serve as a non-
invasive and cost-effective intervention for improving cognitive function in
students with cognitive challenges. It is recommended among others that Schools
should incorporate cognitive training programs into their curriculum, particularly
for students with cognitive impairments. Limitations of the study of the study was
stated as time and inability to all data needed. It was suggested for further study
that other related research should not be centered on only one school and also
extend the data collection to other places like Lagos, Benin City, Ogun State to
mention few.
