Abstract
This study investigates common errors in written English among Hausa native speakers in selected secondary schools within Dala Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria. The research aims to identify prevalent writing challenges, such as grammar errors, spelling mistakes, punctuation issues, capitalization inconsistencies, and sentence fragmentation, among students in Dala Local Government Area of Kano State. Using a descriptive survey, data were collected and assessments of students' written samples. Quantitative analysis revealed that grammar errors were the most common, followed by spelling and punctuation mistakes, while capitalization and sentence fragmentation occurred less frequently. Gender differences were notable, with female students making more spelling errors than their male counterparts, although no significant differences were found based on age or type of institution. The study concludes that the influence of native language structures, particularly Hausa, significantly impacts students' English writing proficiency. Recommendations include targeted grammar instruction, phonetics-based spelling exercises, and explicit teaching of punctuation and capitalization rules. The findings emphasize the importance of tailored teaching strategies to improve English writing skills among secondary school students.
