Abstract
ABSTRACT
Urinary schistosomiasis is caused by the deposition of eggs by adult flukes in the blood vessels surrounding the bladder of the infected host. Schistosomiasis is ranked the second most important parasitic disease of man and undoubtedly the most important of helminth origin. This paper reports the prevalence of schistosoma haematobium infection among pregnant women in some endemic tropical semi- urban communities of Kebb State, A total number of 50 pregnant women who attended the antenatal clinic at Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital were examined in this study. They were divided into three age groups: 14 to 19 years 11 (22%), between 20 and 35 years 31 (62%) and > 35 years 8 (16%). The prevalence of infection was highest (62%) among women aged 20–35 years. It was observed that the majority of women were illiterate 19 (38%). The frequencies of education levels were primary school 5 (10%), secondary school 15 (30%) and high school, 11 (22%). Among the participants, it was noticed that 8 (16%) among them attends private hospital while 42 (84%) attends public hospital. Primigravidae and women in the first trimester of pregnancy had the highest intensity of infection with and eggs/10 mL of urine, respectively
