Assessment of Materials Usage Strategies for Waste Reduction on Building Construction Sites

Abstract
This study assess materials usage strategies for waste reduction on building construction sites in view of reducing wastes and maximizing profit and to obtain complete optimization of the construction process at first attempt. The specific objectives are to examine the problems associated with materials usage on site, identify materials usage strategies in building construction sites and assess the impact of materials usage strategies in building construction sites. The study utilized primary and secondary data. Primary data was obtained through structured questionnaire and interviews with key stakeholders. The target populations are the contractors and supervisors who are in-charge of the project work of the selected buildings in Federal Polytechnic Ede South Campus and Redeemer University, Ede, Osun State. The researcher choose twenty (20) respondents both the contractors and supervisors selected randomly from the selected case study area Out of about 15 tertiary institutions in Osun State, only two (2) were chosen randomly. Results of the study revealed improper procurement management system, inadequate tools and purchase materials that are not complying with the specification. It was also revealed that effects of materials management that were consistently identified among the top 3 for being addressed on construction projects included: Avoids seasonal problems arising with materials, Material is on site when needed and in the quantities required and Improvements in labor productivity. However, study concludes that there is a significant degree of agreement between the two groups with respect to their ranking, this shows that the labor productivity has significant effect on the construction materials management. The study recommends that contractors should ensure their clients have sufficient resources before starting any project.
