Abstract
Abstract
This Project presents the reinforced concrete design of a three-storey residential building located in Kaduna, Nigeria, adhering to the British Standard BS 8110, 1/1997 And Eurocode, utilizing computer-aided design. The research focuses on employing modern computational tools and software applications to optimize the structural design process, ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards. The study encompasses various aspects of structural design, including load calculations, material selection, analysis, and detailing of reinforced concrete elements such as beams, columns, slabs, and foundations. By integrating computer-aided design (CAD) and structural analysis software such as (Protastructure), the research aims to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reliability in the design process while meeting the safety and performance requirements outlined in BS 8110, 1/1997 and Eurocode. The findings of this study are:
The design requirement which include:
Functionality: The basic purpose or use of the design.
Standards and Regulations: The design must comply with local, national, or industry-specific standards and regulations, such as building codes or environmental guidelines.
Materials: Specifications regarding the type, quality, and properties of materials that should be used in the design.
Aesthetics: The visual appearance or style, which might include colors, textures, and shapes.
Safety Factor:
The safety factor (also known as the factor of safety, FoS) is a design principle used to ensure that structures or components perform safely under expected loads, stresses, and conditions. It represents the margin of safety between the maximum load a system can handle and the load it is expected to experience during normal operation.
Purpose: The safety factor accounts for uncertainties in material properties, manufacturing processes, loading conditions, and potential misuse.
