Nutritional Knowledge, Attitude and Practices of Students Athlete in Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma

Abstract
ABSTRACT
The researcher investigated the “Nutritional Knowledge and practices of student athletes in Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, Edo State”. For the purpose of this study, three research questions were raised to guide the study. The study employed a descriptive survey research design, upon which a sample of one hundred and twelve respondents, consisting of fourteen (14) faculties in Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, Edo State. The data was collected through a self-structured questionnaire. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in Human Kinetics and Health Education. The data collected was analyzed using frequency count and percentages. Based on the analysis of the data collected, the findings showed that 59 respondents (52%) strongly agreed that fruits and vegetables are important sources of vitamins and minerals. It is concluded that majority of the student athletes in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma had good nutritional knowledge, with variations in nutritional needs of each athlete. However most students’ athletes are unaware of the right nutritional practices to engage due to their local and other factors like the lack of professional nutritional coaches, various misconception and misinformation concerning diet. It was recommended that student athletes should seek help from the coaches, athletes, and professors to quickly locate the student athletes. Also, a generalized nutrition education plan should be considered to improve nutrition and dietary habits of students athletes.
