Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activity of Senna Occidentalis Against Staphylococcus Aureus

This study was aimed to determine the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of Senna occidentalis methanolic leaf extract against Staphylococcus aureus isolates. Senna occidentalis leaf was extracted and further testing to show the photochemical constituents of the methanolic leaf extract of Senna occidentalis.
The minimum zone of inhibition of the methanolic leaf extract of Senna occidentalis against Staphylococcus aureus at various concentration was 200mg/ml (23.50±0.50 and 22.50±1.00), 100mg/ml (19.00±1.00 and 17.00±0.50), 50mg/ml (15.75±0.25 and 15.50±0.50), 25mg/ml (15.50±0.50 and 15.00±1.00) and 12.5mg/ml (13.75±0.75 and 14.50±1.00) compared to Ciprofloxacin 200mg/ml (21.00±1.00 and 20.50±1.00).
Minimum inhibition concentration identified at 12.5mg/ml and minimum bactericidal concentration at 25mg/ml. The antibiofilm activity against Staphylococcus aureus at concentration 50mg/ml, 25mg/ml, 12.5mg/ml there was biofilm formation and at concentration 200mg/ml and 100mg/ml there was no biofilm formation which shows it inhibited biofilm formation at these concentration.
As the outcome shows the methanolic leaf extract of Senna occidentalis inhibited Staphylococcus aureus which suggest that the extract contains photochemicals and antimicrobial compounds which has a potential for use as sources of safer or more effective antimicrobial agent replacements for synthetically produced antimicrobial agents which are conventionally said to be effective in treating infections.
