Perceived Effect of Family Environment on Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Owerri Municipal Council of Imo State

The topic of this research study focused on “familyenvironment and academic performance of secondary schoolstudents in Owerri Municipal Council of Imo State. Theresearcher embarked on the study to investigate how familyenvironment affect secondary school students academicperformance. In carrying out this research, the researcheradopted the descriptive research design. The population of thisstudy was all the ten public secondary schools in OwerriMunicipal Council, numbering a total population of 5,557. Thesample was five (5) schools out of the ten (10) public schoolsrandomly selected using sample format which gave a samplesize of 304. The instrument for data collection was structuredquestionnaire which was used to collect data from therespondents. The method of data analysis was statistical meanmethod. The findings of this research study showed that familyenvironment has a strong influence on the academicperformance of students in school and it can result to pooracademic performance among students. Based on the abovefindings, recommendations and suggestions for further studieswere made that parents should create a peaceful homeenvironment for their children since the home has influence onthe academic performance of students. They should see thattheir children are given equal opportunities to the familyresources no matter their position in the family
