Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary red blood cell disorder of public health importance globally with Nigeria the epicenter zone in Africa. A clinical overview of the study of coagulation among sickle cell disease patients may proffer strategies for controlling the SCD disease burden. The objective of this study was to examine the patterns of coagulation profile in SCD. The coagulation profile of SCD patients encompasses a spectrum of changes involving various hemostatic components. Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) serve as key indicators of the extrinsic and intrinsic coagulation pathways, respectively. This study highlights some coagulation biomakers and platelets count of homozygous sickle cell patients (HSS) compared with normal controls (HAA). Blood was drawn under sterile conditions into tri-sodium citrate and ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) (4ml) vacutainer tube. The blood collected in sodium citrate container was immediately separated into plasma and red blood cells by centrifugation. The top plasma layer was carefully transferred into plain tube and was used for the determination of coagulation profile (PT and APTT) while the blood collected in EDTA container was used for platelet count. Present study found elevated levels of PT/APTT and Platelets, also, higher Platelets count are noted in various status of SCD, possibly reflecting spleen effect in these patients. It is recommended that clinicians should request for haematological parameters and coagulation profile in the management of sickle cell disease patients for more descriptive data as well as providing useful tools for assistance.
