Abstract
This study is on land use land cover change in birnin kebbi local government area using remote sensing and GIS (1992–2022). The research aimed to identify the land use and land cover types in the study area, examine changes across the time period, and investigate the drivers behind these changes. Using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques, supervised classification was employed to analyze satellite imagery from 1992, 2002, and 2022. The findings revealed significant shifts in LULC, characterized by an increase in built-up areas and farmland at the expense of vegetation and bare-land. Rocky areas and water-bodies also exhibited notable variations in coverage. The study identified population growth, agricultural expansion, urbanization, and economic activities as key drivers of LULC changes. These drivers, influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors, underscore the pressure exerted on land resources in Birnin Kebbi. The research highlights the implications of these changes on sustainable land management, environmental conservation, and policy formulation. The methodological approach, which involved a combination of supervised classification and ground truth validation, ensured the accuracy of the analysis and provided a comprehensive understanding of spatial and temporal patterns. The study concludes with recommendations for promoting sustainable land use practices and proposes further research on the socioeconomic and ecological impacts of LULC changes. This work contributes to the growing body of knowledge on land use dynamics in Nigeria and provides valuable insights for urban planning, agricultural management, and environmental protection in Birnin Kebbi and beyond.
