Abstract
ABSTRACTS
This study investigates the impact of sleep quality and recovery strategies on athletic performance among university athletes at the University of Ilorin. Recognizing that sleep and recovery are critical yet often overlooked factors influencing physical and cognitive performance, the research aims to assess how these elements interact within the unique context of student-athletes balancing academic and athletic demands. A descriptive survey design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire administered to a sample of 231 athletes across four sports disciplines.
Findings reveal that a significant majority of athletes perceive high sleep quality as essential for optimal performance, with positive correlations established between sleep quality and athletic outcomes such as focus, energy, and overall effectiveness during training and competitions. Recovery strategies including active recovery, hydration, and nutrition were also widely regarded as beneficial, although psychological recovery techniques received less favorable responses. Notably, barriers such as demanding training schedules, academic commitments, and psychological stress were identified as major hindrances to achieving adequate sleep and effective recovery.
Statistical analysis using chi-square tests confirmed significant relationships between sleep quality, recovery strategies, and athletic performance (p < 0.05). The results underscore that poor sleep quality and related barriers adversely affect recovery and performance, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to promote better sleep hygiene and holistic recovery practices among university athletes. Additionally, effective time management was shown to mitigate some challenges associated with balancing academic and athletic responsibilities.
In conclusion, the study emphasizes that enhancing sleep quality and implementing comprehensive recovery strategies are vital for optimizing athletic performance and safeguarding athlete health. Recommendations include establishing education programs on sleep hygiene, integrating mental recovery techniques, and improving access to recovery resources. Addressing identified barriers can foster sustainable performance improvements and long-term well-being among university athletes.
