Abstract
The increasing role of digital health record (DHR) systems in healthcare institutions
worldwide has transformed how patient information is managed, enhancing
accessibility, accuracy, and efficiency. In Nigeria, however, DHR adoption remains
limited, with many hospitals continuing to rely on paper-based records. Recognizing
the potential of digital systems to improve healthcare delivery, the University of
Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) recently implemented a DHR system. Given
that the success of this technology largely depends on user satisfaction and integration
into daily workflows, this study aimed to assess the satisfaction levels of healthcare
workers with the DHR system at UMTH.
This was a cross-sectional study with 423 healthcare workers, using a selfadministered questionnaire, achieving a 100 per cent response rate. Key findings
reveal that 67.8 per cent of healthcare workers reported good knowledge of the DHR
system, and 59.6 per cent expressed satisfaction with its role in improving information
access and reducing delays. However, several challenges were identified, including
unstable power supply 9.4 per cent, inadequate infrastructure for DHR integration 9.3
per cent, limited IT facilities and equipment 9.3 per cent, configuration issues 9.1 per
cent, and unreliable internet connectivity 9.1 per cent. The analysis revealed
significant associations between DHR knowledge and satisfaction with factors such
as job title, years of experience, and age.
This study highlights the need for improved infrastructure, such as stable power and
internet connectivity, and recommends ongoing training and technical support to
enhance DHR use. The findings provide valuable insights for optimizing the DHR
system at UMTH, contributing to more effective healthcare delivery
