Abstract
Teaching English as a second language (ESL) poses unique challenges in Ikere Local Government Area, Ekiti State. This study investigates the multifaceted issues affecting the effective teaching and learning of English in this region, emphasizing the interplay of socio-cultural, economic, and educational factors. The research identifies challenges such as inadequate instructional resources, unqualified teachers, lack of student motivation, and the influence of indigenous languages. Additionally, the study explores how socio-economic conditions and local attitudes toward English as a second language impact student outcomes. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys, interviews, and classroom observations. The findings underscore the need for tailored teacher training programs, improved resource allocation, and innovative strategies to integrate English into the local context effectively. This study concludes with actionable recommendations to enhance English language education in Ikere Ekiti, fostering linguistic competence and academic achievement in the region.
