Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effect of persea Americana leaf on alloxan induced female wistar rats.
25 female rats with body weight of 150-250g were used for the study. The animals were grouped into five(5), each group consisting of five rats. Twenty rats were in groups denoted as group B C, D and E and were injected with 120mg/kg of alloxan intraperitoneally and confirmed diabetic before experiment began.
Group A (control ) were given feed and water only, Group B (diabetic control) received 1.0g/ml
of alloxan that was injected intraperitoneally and were fed with feed and water, Group C after inducement, received 500mg/kg of ethanolic extract of Persea Americana leaf, Group D received 1500mg/kg of ethanolic extract of Persea Americana leaf and Group E received
5mg/kg of Standard Dmg (Glibenclamide).
At the end of each week of administration of ethanoic extract of persea Americana, the fasting blood glucose level of each rat (Groups B, C, D, E) was determined via tail puncture using Accu check glucometer and the readings were recorded.
At day 0, there was increase in the fasting blood glucose level in groups B, C, D and E compared to Group A (Normal Control).
At day 7, an Increase in Group A was compared to Group B( Diabetic control), while Groups C, D and E had a decline in fasting blood glucose level when compared to Groups A and B.At this stage, the anti diabetic effect of ethanoic extract of Persea Americana leaf is not dose dependent because the effects of the extract was yet to take place.
At day 14, increase in Group A was compared to B, while Groups C, D and E had decline in fasting blood glucose level compared to Group B.
At day 21, Groups A and B were also compared in terms of fasting blood glucose level, while Groups C, D and E had decline in fasting blood glucose level when compared to Group B.There were assumptions that the ethanoic extract of persea Americana was dose dependent.
At day 28, the result revealed an Increase in the fasting blood glucose level in Group A and B compared to Groups C, D, and E which had decline in fasting blood glucose level. Here, dosage dependence was noticed.
