Abstract
Fucoidan, a polymer derived from the brown seaweed sargassum spp, poses a broad range of biological applications, and its potential medicinal benefits have been widely studied over the past decade. This study investigated the molecular docking of fucoidan with 5-alpha-reductase and Na+ K+ ATPase in prostate cancer with tumour suppression. This was done using Pyrx software, Biovia discovery studio software and CB-DOCK web-platform. Swiss ADME was employed to validate the pharmacokinetic properties of the ligands such as fucoidan used in this study. Which indicate that fucoidan did not violate the Lipinski rule, fucoidan have a high G.I adsorption rate which indicate that it can be absorbed quickly and effectively into the bloodstream after being ingested which can lead to a faster onset of its action and availability to produce it desired effect. Also, the binding affinity of fucoidan with the target proteins (5-alphareductase and Na+ K+ ATPase) were low compared to the standard drugs. As a result of this, fucoidan would cause little or no side effect when used compared to the standard drugs. Therefore, this study suggests that fucoidan isolated can be used as a chemotherapeutic drug in the treatment of cancer as a result of its wide range of pharmacological and biomedical properties reported in previous studies, thereby leading to time and resource savings in the drug development pipeline.
