Assessment of Coccidial Oocysts in One_humped Camel (camelus Dromedarius)at Kano Main Abbatoir

Abstract
Coccidiosis, caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria, is a significant parasitic infection affecting camels, with implications for their health, productivity, and the economy of camel-rearing communities. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated risk factors of coccidial oocysts in one-humped camels (Camelus dromedarius) at Kano Main Abattoir, Nigeria. A total of 200 fecal samples were collected from camels of varying ages, sexes, and origins and analyzed using flotation and microscopy techniques to detect and identify coccidial oocysts.The overall prevalence of coccidial oocysts was 36.3%, with higher infection rates observed in younger camels (55%) compared to adults (23.3%). Females showed a slightly higher prevalence (40%) than males (33.3%). Two species of Eimeria were identified: Eimeria cameli and Eimeria dromedarii, with E. cameli being the most prevalent. Environmental and management factors, such as poor hygiene, overcrowding, and the origin of camels, were identified as significant contributors to the high infection rates.This study underscores the importance of implementing effective control measures, including improved sanitation, regular fecal screening, targeted treatments for young camels, and education for camel owners. These interventions are critical for reducing the prevalence of coccidial infections and improving the overall health and productivity of camels.
