Abstract
This study investigates the knowledge of risk factors and management practices regarding benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) among staff members at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU). BPH, a prevalent condition in older men, often leads to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and can significantly impact quality of life. The research employs a quantitative cross-sectional survey, targeting MOUAU staff to assess their awareness of BPH risk factors such as age, family history, obesity, and lifestyle habits. Findings indicate that while 67% of respondents show good knowledge about BPH risk factors, there are considerable gaps in understanding effective management strategies, which include lifestyle changes, medication, and surgical options. The study highlights the need for targeted educational initiatives to bridge these knowledge gaps, particularly in management techniques, to promote early diagnosis and effective treatment adherence. Health promotion efforts, including lifestyle interventions and regular screenings, are recommended to improve health outcomes and reduce the complications associated with untreated BPH among at-risk groups within the university community.
