Abstract
ABSTRACT
Child abuse and neglect remain pervasive issues with far-reaching implications for the well-being and academic performance of student especially those in secondary school. This study investigates the impact, prevalence, types, and factors contributing to child abuse and neglect in selected secondary schools in Ikere-Ekiti, Nigeria, examining their impact on students' academic outcomes. The study adopted survey research design using questionnaire to generate primary data. The study reveals that majority of the respondents have experienced one kind of abuse or the other, with girls disproportionately affected. Key findings indicate that sexual, physical, and emotional abuses are prevalent, often perpetrated by family members or teachers, leading to negative consequences on academic focus, mental health, and school performance. The study further identifies socio-economic challenges, cultural norms, and a lack of reporting mechanisms as significant factors contributing to abuse. The results underscore a strong correlation between abuse experiences and poor academic achievement, as abused students exhibit signs of low concentration, sleep disturbances, and absenteeism. To mitigate this issue, the study recommends a multifaceted approach, including the establishment of anonymous reporting channels in schools, community awareness programs, economic support for at-risk families, and school-based mental health resources. The findings contribute to the understanding of child abuse’s impact on educational outcomes and highlight the need for policies that ensure safe and supportive learning environments for vulnerable students
