Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study carried out to examine (Readers Perception of Print Media Campaigns on Illegal
Migration in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria). The population of this study is made up of
people residing in Benin City, Edo State. The current population of Benin City, Edo State is 1.9
million according to the United Nations (UN, 2011). In this research study, the sample size of
four hundred (400) was draft from the population using Taro Yemane statistical calculation to
arrive at the sample size. This study is anchored on the Social Control Theory. Government,
NGO’s and other agencies involved in the fight against trafficking should reach out to media
outlets to run regular public service announcements (PSAs). These PSAs should be based on a
genuine story about individuals who have been victims of illegal migration, including victims
of labour trafficking and a victim of sex trafficking. From the findings of this study the
researcher concludes that majority of the people in the Benin City, Edo State in Nigeria are
exposed and aware of campaigns on illegal migration, however, they are not consistent or
regular. The researcher recommends that NGOs should also work with governments to
establish a national hotline to report illegal migration and obtain information about services.
Those numbers should be heavily advertised through media outlets.
