Abstract
Cryptosporidiosis is recognized as a significant water\food borne zoonosis associated with morbidity and economic losses in farm animals. The zoonotic risk of Cryptosporidium Via fish borne infection is emergency as a significant public health concern worldwide.
In order to determine the occurrence of Cryptosporidium oocyst in selected farms from Kaduna metropolis, 200 catfish samples were examined using the modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining technique. The fishes were disected to collect visceral contents. The GIT content scraping was used to make smears, which were subsequently fixed with methanol and stained for the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts under oil immersion. The gills were concentrated using formol-ether concentration technique and then centrifuge and subsequently smeared and stained using modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain technique.
In total 44(22%) samples were positive for Cryptosporidium oocysts. The highest prevalence among sampled location is Kawo (50%), followed by Mando (25%), Barnawa (15%), Hayin Mallam Bello (12.5%) and Sabo (10%) and there is a statistical significant difference (X2 test: p
