Abstract
The bacteriological quality of well water in Ekpoma was investigated using standard bacteriological
methods. The mean total viable count/heterotrophic plate counts of the water samples ranged from3.35× 10⁶, 5.30 × 10⁸ (cfu/ml) and the total coliform counts range from 33->2400/100ml while theEcoli
count is within the range of < 29/100ml of the water samples. The bacteria isolated include Escherichiacoli, Kiebsiella pneumonia, Proteus mirabilis, Salmnonella sp, Shigella sp., Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The presence of these
microorganisms (bacteria) in well water samples are of public health importance. It implies that thewell
water did not meet the world Health Organisation standard for drinking water, hence the water needtobe boiled and filtered before drinking to avoid water borne disease outbreak in the community.
