Abstract
The Effect of Fuel Subsidy Removal on Economics students of Bayero University, Kano: A case study of 400 level students of Economics Department. The Removal of Fuel Subsidy in Nigeria has affected the Economics students of Bayero University, Kano, particularly the 400 level students of the Department. The study explores the Effect of Fuel Subsidy Removal on 400 level students of Economics in Bayero University, Kano, focusing on the challenges they face in their academic performance and well being, and rising costs of living. Fuel Subsidy have been a contentious issue in Nigeria due to their economic and political implications. While the Removal of Fuel Subsidy can promote fiscal discipline and discourage corruption, it also leads to higher fuel prices, impacting the costs of living for the average citizens. For students, this increase in expenses exacerbates financial hardships and poses significant challenges to their academic pursuits .The cost of commuting to and fro Bayero University has risen significantly since the Removal of Fuel Subsidy. Students must now allocate a larger portion of their limited budgets to cover transportation expenses, leaving less for other essential items such as textbooks, academic materials, and housing. Moreover, the increased in fuel prices have a ripple effect on the cost of food and other necessities, as transportation costs are factored into the price of goods. Furthermore, the financial strain caused by the removal of fuel subsidy may disproportionately affect students from low-income backgrounds, exacerbating existing socio-economic disparities and hindering social mobility. For these students, the added expenses can pose insurmountable barriers to pursuing higher education and realizing their potential. In conclusion, the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria has wide-ranging implications for Economics students of Bayero University, Kano, particularly the 400 level students. As the cost of living rises and financial pressures mount, the students face significant challenges in affording basic necessities. It is crucial for policymakers to consider the unintended consequences of such measures and implement targeted support mechanisms to mitigate the adverse effects on vulnerable populations, such as students.
