Abstract
Urban insecurity in Nigeria’s cities, particularly in Kano, has emerged as a growing challenge influenced by various socio-economic dynamics. This study investigates the relationship between economic factors and urban insecurity in the residential areas of Gwale Local Government, Kano State. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research draws on both primary data including surveys, interviews, and field observations and secondary sources. Findings reveal that unemployment, poverty, inflation, and government economic policies significantly contribute to heightened insecurity in urban neighbourhoods. The study also identifies prevalent crimes such as phone snatching, burglary, and pickpocketing, and examines the role of residential security tools ranging from basic burglar-proofing to more advanced systems. However, the cost and accessibility of these tools vary significantly across income levels, affecting their adoption. The research underscores the need for targeted policy interventions that address economic disparities and improve security infrastructure in low-income areas. Ultimately, the study contributes to a nuanced understanding of the economic underpinnings of urban crime and offers insights for sustainable urban safety planning in rapidly growing Nigerian cities.
