Abstract
In Northwestern Nigeria, it was discovered that only 44 (36.7%) senior residents had published any manuscripts during their residency training hence identifying trainers’ views on the expected extent of resident doctors in research, their perception of the current extent, and the extent to which the trainers can train and support residents' research activity will help to improve the involvement of resident doctors in research.
This study utilizes a mixed method approach both to explore and assess the trainers' extent of support, roles perceived institutional factors that influence resident doctors involvement in research. The qualitative aspect of the study which aims at answering objectives one and three was thematically analysed across the eight trainers interviewees, while the quantitative aspect which aimed at answering the objectives two, four and five was analysed using the simple and linear regression to identify trainers' extent of support for resident doctors at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex.
This study showed that trainers were involved in the training of resident doctors in different aspects of research. However remarkably low percentage (< 40%) didn’t train residents in grant proposal wring to fund research. It also showed that the type of appointment and participation of trainers in research during their residency influences the extent to which they (the trainers) support the resident doctors in research. This study showed that revealed common facilitating factors and barriers perceived by the trainers to limit resident doctors’ involvement in research.
The findings revealed a belief among trainers that resident doctors should be actively involved in research to stay updated in their field. The majority also agreed on specific roles trainers can play in fostering this involvement, The study also identified factors influencing trainers' support. Finally, trainers highlighted institutional barriers hindering resident doctors' involvement in research. These findings provide insights for developing strategies to enhance resident doctors' engagement in research.
In conclusion this study found that there is a general consensus among trainers that resident doctors should be actively involved in research to promote evidence-based medicine.
