Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to investigate the impact of ginger extract on the hormonal profiles of
laying hens. A total of forty (40) point of lay birds was used and randomized into four (4)
treatments with each containing ten replicates; Control group (i.e. Treatment 1), Treatment 2 (0.3g
of ginger powder/litre of water), Treatment 3(0.6g of ginger powder/litre of water) and Treatment
4(0.9g of ginger powder/litre of water). The extract which was administered in drinking water
lasted for 10 weeks. Blood samples were collected at the end of the experiment to determine the
serum concentrations of reproductive hormones (progesterone, oestrogen, luteinizing, and follicle-
stimulating hormone). At the end of the experiment, the data obtained were subjected to Analysis
of Variance (ANOVA) using Minitab Software. The results showed that ginger extract was able
to maintain the level of oestrogen in layer hens and significantly elevate other reproductive
hormone (progesterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone) concentration in
layers. These findings show that ginger extract can maintain hormonal profiles for enhancing possible maximum egg production
