Abstract
ABSTRACT
The broad objective of this study is to evaluate strategies to revive the cultivation and consumption of selected underutilized crops walnut (Plukenetia conophora), amaranthus (Amaranthus spp.), and cotton milk plant (Marsdenia spp.) in Oghe, Ezeagu Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria. A total of 60 households were selected using a multi-stage sampling procedure, and data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews. Descriptive statistics, Likert scale rating, and percentage analysis were employed for data Anaylsis. The findings revealed that major constraints affecting the cultivation of these underutilized crops include lack of policy support (mean = 3.0948), limited access to quality seeds (mean = 2.8251), and inadequate irrigation systems (mean = 2.7732). Additionally, post-harvest losses (mean = 2.5868), pest infestations (mean = 2.5548), and climate-related challenges significantly impact productivity. Processing inefficiencies were also observed, as 78.3% of respondents engaged in processing but only 41.7% found their methods efficient. High processing costs (76.7%), time consumption (81.7%), and inadequate facilities (66.7%) were identified as key barriers. Storage challenges were prevalent, with 60% reporting spoilage and 80% lacking modern storage facilities. Furthermore, 90% agreed that improved storage methods would enhance profitability. Despite these challenges, the study highlighted significant health benefits of these crops, including antioxidant properties (mean = 3.0912), high fiber content (mean = 3.0123), and heart-healthy effects (mean = 3.0217). Their rich nutrient profiles support immune function, aid digestion, and contribute to managing lifestyle diseases. To address these constraints, the study recommends policy interventions to enhance government support, investment in modern processing and storage infrastructure, market development initiatives, and capacity-building programs for farmers. By implementing these strategies, the widespread adoption and utilization of these crops can contribute to food security, economic empowerment, and improved public health in the study area
