Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effect of Duranta yellow leaf powder on the serum biochemical indices of broiler chicken. A total of 192 day-old broiler chicks (Cobb 500 and Arbor Acre strains) were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments: control, 0.25 g/kg Duranta leaf powder, 0.50 g/kg Duranta leaf powder, and Vitamin C supplementation, in a completely randomized design. Birds were raised for six weeks with ad libitum feed and water. Blood samples were collected, and serum biochemical parameters including total protein, albumin, globulin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatinine, cholesterol, and glucose were analyzed. The results revealed that broilers fed Duranta leaf powder showed significant improvements in key biochemical indices. AST levels were reduced in Duranta-fed birds compared with control and Vitamin C groups, suggesting hepatoprotective effects, while ALT values remained within normal physiological limits. Creatinine concentrations decreased, indicating nephroprotective properties. Cholesterol levels were lowest in the 0.50 g/kg Duranta group, demonstrating a hypocholesterolemic effect. Glucose levels were reduced, reflecting improved glycemic control, whereas total protein and albumin remained within normal ranges, confirming no adverse effects on protein metabolism. Dietary inclusion of Duranta yellow leaf powder at 0.25–0.50 g/kg feed is safe and beneficial for broiler chickens. It supports liver and kidney health, regulates lipid and glucose metabolism, and maintains protein balance, thereby enhancing overall physiological well-being. The results highlight Duranta yellow as a natural, cost-effective phytogenic feed additive and a viable alternative to synthetic supplements in sustainable poultry production.
