Investigating the Impact of Social Media Usage on the Mental Health of Undergraduates in Bamidele Olumilua University of Education Science and Technology Ikere Ekiti

Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes
among undergraduate students at Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and
Technology, Ikere Ekiti (BOUESTI). Specifically, it examines the impact of social media usage on
anxiety and depression, the relationship between usage patterns (frequency and duration) and
mental health, the platforms and activities most associated with negative outcomes, and strategies
to mitigate adverse effects. A descriptive survey design was employed, with data collected from 200
students using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including
Chi-square tests, ANOVA, and Spearman correlation, were conducted to answer the research
questions and test the hypotheses. The results indicate that social media usage does not
significantly predict anxiety and depression among students. Similarly, the frequency and duration
of use showed weak and insignificant correlations with mental health outcomes. Specific platforms
and activities, including primary reasons for social media usage such as entertainment and
socializing, were not significantly associated with higher anxiety or depression levels. Students
willing to reduce social media usage demonstrated slightly lower anxiety and depression scores,
but the differences were not statistically significant. The findings suggest that social media's impact
on mental health is influenced by contextual and individual factors rather than general usage
patterns. The study concludes that promoting mindful social media usage and providing mental
health support services can mitigate potential negative effects. Recommendations include
integrating digital literacy into the curriculum, offering mental health counseling, and encouraging
offline engagement
