Abstract
This study investigates the spending patterns and financial behaviors of students in a tertiary institution, aiming to understand the factors influencing student expenditure and the statistical significance in term of gender-based spending differences. Through a comprehensive survey, data were collected on key expenditure categories, including tuition fees, accommodation, food, transportation, and discretionary spending. The study employed descriptive statistics and two-sample t-tests to analyze gender disparities in spending on categories such as dining out, clothing, and data subscriptions. Findings reveal that while most students depend heavily on family support and personal budgeting, many experience financial discomfort, with over half reporting moderate to high levels of financial strain. Gender-based analysis shows significant differences in expenditures on discretionary items like entertainment and data usage, with female students spending more on entertainment and male students spending more on airtime and data subscriptions. The study underscores the need for enhanced financial literacy programs, improved access to scholarships, and affordable on-campus amenities to alleviate student financial burdens. The findings offer insights into the socioeconomic dynamics of student expenditure, highlighting areas where institutional support can foster better financial resilience among students.
