Incidence and Outcome of Total Abdominal Hysterectomy Among Child-Bearing Women That Attended Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital from January 2015 to December 2020

Abstract
This research was aim at determining the incidence and outcome of total abdominal
hysterectomy among child bearing women in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo
State. From January 2015 to December 2020. Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital like
any other hospital has a record of incidence of total abdominal hysterectomy. Purpose
sampling technique was adopted in the study. The target population was 752 women of
child bearing who attended antenatal clinic in the ISTH was studied within the period
under review from January 2015 and December, 2020. The results showed that the
incidence of total abdominal hysterectomy among child-bearing women that attended,
Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua from January 2015 to December 2020 was
high. The year with the highest incidence of total abdominal hysterectomy among child
bearing women was 2015 (29.7 percent) while the lowest incidence of total abdominal
hysterectomy among child-bearing women was recorded in 2018 (5.4 percent). The
study showed that high percentage of the outcome of the total abdominal hysterectomy
was pyrexia 18(14.8%) followed by anaemia 12 (9.8 percent). Therefore, training is
advocated with a view to reducing the presently high morbidity rate as well as
achieving our aim of optimizing the reproductive health outcomes of women in the
hospital.
