Abstract
Abstract
Cryptocurrency mining has gained significant attention worldwide, with university students increasingly participating in mining activities to generate income and secure financial independence. This study investigates the impact of cryptocurrency mining on the academic adjustment of university students in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study explores how mining affects students’ academic performance, time management, financial well-being, social interactions, and overall university experience. A descriptive survey research design was employed, and data were collected from 50 university students actively engaged in cryptocurrency mining. The findings indicate that while mining presents opportunities for financial stability and technological skill development, it also introduces several challenges. Many students reported that mining activities distract them from academic responsibilities, leading to reduced study time, missed deadlines, and lower class attendance. Additionally, the financial pressures associated with mining—such as the cost of electricity and hardware—sometimes force students to prioritize mining over essential academic expenses. The study further reveals that mining-related stress, mental fatigue, and sleep deprivation contribute to difficulties in academic adjustment. Despite these challenges, some students benefit from cryptocurrency mining by acquiring valuable financial literacy, problem-solving abilities, and technical knowledge, which may enhance their career prospects in the evolving digital economy. The study concludes that while cryptocurrency mining can be a beneficial financial tool, its impact on academic adjustment is largely dependent on the students’ ability to balance their mining activities with academic responsibilities. Based on the findings, the study recommends that universities and educational policymakers implement structured financial literacy programs, provide guidance on responsible cryptocurrency engagement, and introduce time management strategies to help students optimize both their academic performance and financial aspirations. Future research should explore the long-term implications of cryptocurrency mining on students' career development and financial stability.
