Abstract
The common housefly is an essential component of nutrient recycling in the environment. Using housefly larvae to biodegrade presents an opportunity to reduce waste disposal while the rapidly assimilated insect biomass can also be used as a protein enrichment in animal feed. In this project, a livestock feed that has higher protein concentrate for pigs was developed by replacing the common protein source with sustainable and cheaper Housefly Larva meal. To achieve this, the Housefly larva was cultivated, harvested, grinded and mixed with other components that makes up pig livestock feed. A proximate composition was carried out on the dried Housefly Larva in order to determine the crude (total) protein concentrate. The result showed approximately 48.6% percent crude (total) protein and 58.8% protein concentration. The result indicated that the nutritional value of Housefly larva meal is 20% higher than commercial soy beans protein sourced livestock feed making it a better alternative for use as a protein-rich feed ingredient.
