Abstract
Religious violence has become a significant and recurring issue in Nigeria, posing serious
challenges to the nation's stability, unity, and development. This study explores the impact of
religious violence on nation-building, focusing specifically on the Plateau crisis. The research
aims to understand the root causes, dynamics, and consequences of religious conflicts in Plateau
State, where clashes between religious groups have had profound social, economic, and political
impacts. Using a sample population of 200 participants, including community members,
religious leaders, and government officials, this study employs both qualitative and quantitative
methodologies to analyze the factors fueling religious violence. Findings reveal that religious
violence disrupts community cohesion, undermines trust in government, and weakens institutions,
ultimately hindering nation-building efforts. The study further highlights the role of socio-
economic disparities, political manipulation, and inadequate conflict resolution mechanisms as
catalysts of violence. Recommendations are made for policy interventions that promote tolerance,
foster inclusive governance, and strengthen conflict resolution frameworks to mitigate religious
tensions and foster a more resilient and cohesive nation. This research contributes to
understanding the complexities of religious violence and offers insights into strategies for
promoting peace and sustainable development in Nigeria.
