Evaluation of Micro Organisms in Re-Creational Swimming Pools in Auchi Metropolis

This research work is mainly focusing on the Microbial Evaluation of Swimming
Pools in Auchi Environment. Recreation is a very important component in the life of
people in the world and it comes in different forms. Swimming pool is a structure
filled with water intended for swimming or water-based recreation. Swimming pools
water should meet portable water standard by being transparent, odorless, and
tasteless liquid having a freezing point at 0°C and boiling point of 100°C. The
chemistry of drinking waters completely differs from swimming pools water
chemistry. Some of the chemical component of pool water will be transformed after
their release pool water. Samples of swimming pool water were obtained from three
popular swimming pools within Auchi. The working are were disinfected thoroughly
before and after use with ethanol (75%) cotton wool was soaked in ethanol and used
to clean the working bench, a Bunsen burner was put on and the flame was allowed
to burn, this help in sterilizing the air in the laboratory. The result of the three
samples examined shows that they are contaminated with microorganisms such as
aerobie and anaerobic bacteria, coli forms and filamentous fungi. The highest total
viable count to be 9.8 x cfu/ml while the lowest count was 4.2 x 10 cfu/ml; these
counts are relatively high. The high microbial load in the pools could be
contaminants from swimmers or inadequate treatment of pools. Many of the out
breaks related to swimming pools and similar environments have occurred because
disinfection was not applied or was inadequate.
