Abstract
Microbiological quality assessment of indoor air study is one of the most vital investigations to determine the microbial indoor air contaminant. Understanding the concentrations of airborne microorganisms is essential for evaluating health risks and establishing indoor air quality standards. Airborne bacteria can have various effects on both human health and the environment. This research was carried out to evaluate airborne bacteria from the Reading Room of Hall 2 Hostel, University of Benin, Benin City. Standard bacteriological methods were used to enumerate the total bacterial count. The bacterial isolates were characterized and identified using morphological and biochemical methods. In this study, airborne bacteria in reading room was evaluated, the results obtained showed a bacterial population ranging from 1.4x102 cfu/m3 - 8.40x102 cfu/m3 for first sampling week and 1.95x102 cfu/m3 - 1.24x103 cfu/m3 for second sampling week. The identified the bacterial isolates were Proteus sp., Salmonella sp., Bacillus sp. and Echerichia coli. The isolates were resistant to some of the antibiotics namely cefotaxime and imipenem, but were susceptible to gentamicin and ciprofloxacin.
