Abstract
ABSTRACT
Culture is important for keeping the beliefs and rules of a society alive, but it also creates chances for creativity and change. Cultural heritage is an integral part of any community. It represents the customs, traditions, and values that have been passed down from one generation to another. The study examines Ekekhen history and culture from the earliest times to present. By employing historical methodology, the study made use of both primary and secondary sources of data. In its review of related literature, the study discussed some elements of culture which are symbols, language, values, norms and traditions. The study also discussed the political, social, and economic background of Ekekhen in pre-colonial times. In addition, the study shows that as the last settlers that migrated from Benin, Ekekhen culture even under the façade of modernity remains that of Benin. Various festivals such as Edion, Ehor, Ekpo, and Igue are some of the cultural heritage of Ekekhen. Thus, studying the cultural history of Ekekhen helps us understand how Ekekhen culture is important and where it fits in society.
