Consumer Preference for Millet/millet-Based Food in Wamakko Local Government Area, Sokoto State

Abstract
This study analyzed consumer preferences ,factors and constraints for millet-based foods
in Wamakko Local Government Area , Sokoto State, Nigeria. Using data from75
respondents selected via multi-stage sampling, descriptive statistics and a Censored
Logistics Regression model was employed for analysis. Findings revealed that the
majority of consumers were male(57.3%), aged 45 years or older, married(66.7%), and
primarily traders (73.3%). Educational levels were highest for Qur’anic
education(48.0%), and most respondents earned 5,000-10,000 monthly. Millet/Milletbased foods were widely consumed, with 82.7% showing preference, especially for
Fura(57.3%). Preferences were driven by availability(26.7%), cultural
significance(20.0%), nutritional benefits(14.7%), affordability(6.7%), and taste(14.7%).
Key determinants included gender, education, occupation, and perceived factors.
Constraints to consumption included high prices(34.7%), low income(20.0%), and time
of preparation of millet-based foods(17.3%). The study recommends promoting
affordable, convenient millet products and raising awareness of their nutritional, health
benefits and cultural value to enhance consumption.
