The Role of Community Newspaper in Creating Political Awareness Among Rural Dwellers

Abstract
This study is being conducted to examine the Role of Community Newspaper in Creating Political Awareness among rural dwellers with particular reference to Osun Defender Newspaper. The objectives of the study are to; find out the actual influence the community newspapers have in creating political awareness; provide information on the level of the exposure of the populace of Osun in politics and politics matters; emphasize the importance of rural dwellers participation in politics; enlighten the rural folks on the importance of their votes during election; use community newspapers to attract development and investment in rural sector. Literature of relevant scholars were review in the study where Uses and Gratification theory and social responsibility theory was the based theoretical framework. Survey method was employed in carrying out this research, 150 questionnaires were distributed out of which on 140 copies were successfully filled and returned. Analysis was done with the use of simple percentage. Findings have shown that majority of the respondents have access to newspaper. Findings of this research also revealed that community newspaper helped in the creation of political awareness to the people as majority of the respondents agreed upon.
