The Comparative Effect of Moringa Oleifera, Curcuma Longa and Cocos Nucifera Oil on Anxiety and Depression in Cisplatin Administered Male Wistar Rats

ABSTRACT
The present study investigates the comparative effect of Moringa oleifera, Curcuma longa and Cocos nucifera oil on anxiety and depression in cisplatin administered male wistar rats. Thirty (30) male wistar rats were divided into six group: Group 1: control group, Group 2: cisplatin (50mg/kg), Group 3: cisplatin (50mg/kg) + Moringa oleifera (200mg/kg), Group 4: cisplatin (50mg/kg) + Curcuma longa (200mg/kg), Group 5: cisplatin + Moringa oleifera + Cocos nucifera (1ml), Group 6: cisplatin (50mg/kg) + Curcuma longa (200mg/kg) + Cocos nucifera oil (1ml). This study lasted for four (4) weeks and administration was done via intraperitoneal route (cisplatin) and oral route (Moringa oleifera, curcuma longa and Cocos nucifera oil) using orogastric cannula, between 8am-10am daily. Behavioural analyses, including the Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) and social interaction tests, were conducted to assess anxiety and social behaviours, respectively. The results shows that cisplatin significantly reduced anxiety levels in rats compared to the control group. Conversely, the administration of Moringa oleifera, Curcuma longa, and Cocos nucifera oil, either individually or in combination with cisplatin, significantly increased anxiety levels compared to the cisplatin-only group. Social interaction tests revealed that cisplatin significantly decreased social behaviour in the experimental rats used. While treatments with the natural compounds which are moringa oleifera, curcuma longa and Cocos nucifera oil significantly improved social interactions between the experimental rats. This shows that Moringa oleifera, curcuma longa, and cocos nucifera oil significantly improves the rat’s social interaction.
