Creative Use of Sequins and Stones on Tiv and Idoma Traditionally Woven Fabric

ABSTRACT

This study evaluates the creative use of sequins and stones on Tiv and Idoma traditional fabric, focusing on the aesthetic, functional, and commercial impacts of these embellishments. Findings reveal that the placement and pattern of sequins and stones significantly enhance the visual appeal of the fabric, with a mean rating of 3.60, making it attractive to both traditional and modern sensibilities. The secure and even application received a mean rating of 3.30, highlighting a general agreement on consistency, though some variability was noted. Cultural authenticity is maintained through these embellishments, as indicated by a strong mean score of 3.70, supporting a balance between tradition and contemporary fashion appeal. However, fabric flexibility was rated at 2.80, suggesting some limitations due to the added embellishments, which may require design adjustments. Comfort levels received a mean score of 3.50, showing that the fabric generally remains comfortable despite the additions, although perceptions varied. Innovation in using sequins and stones was highly rated, with a mean score of 3.80, reflecting an appreciation for the creative enhancement and added value. The product’s commercial potential in the Nigerian market was affirmed with a mean rating of 3.70, suggesting strong market interest. Durability received a rating of 3.40, indicating general confidence but some reservations regarding long-term performance. Additionally, the adhesive’s performance under challenging conditions was positively rated at 3.60, demonstrating that the embellishments are likely to remain intact across various environments, further enhancing usability. These findings underscore the potential of sequins and stones to add value to traditional fabrics, making them more versatile and commercially appealing.
