Abstract
Stage lighting plays a vital role in theatre and the performance arts, contributing significantly to the overall visual aesthetics of a production. This research examines the art of stage lighting in Nigeria using the production of The Trials in Rivers State University Amphitheatre as its case study. Drawing upon Mccandless's "Four Basic Theories of Lighting" as its theoretical framework, this qualitative study explores the multifaceted functions of lighting in theatre, encompassing venue definition, performer enhancement, and mood establishment. The findings underscore the importance of understanding the intricate relationship between stage lighting and visual aesthetics for both aspiring and experienced professionals in the theatre. A critical observation emerging from this study is the prevalence of outdated lighting equipment in many Nigerian theatrical productions. This outdated technology often hinders the development of sophisticated lighting effects, limiting the creative possibilities of stage productions. Additionally, the lack of comprehensive documentation in Nigerian theatre impedes thorough research and innovation in the field. To address these challenges, the study recommends that stakeholders prioritize investments in cutting-edge lighting technology. This could involve securing government funding, grants, or establishing collaborative partnerships to enhance the overall technical capabilities of theatre productions. Moreover, the establishment of libraries dedicated to archiving documentation of past lighting shows would provide valuable resources for researchers and students, fostering a culture of knowledge preservation and advancement within the Nigerian theatre community.
