Abstract
The study investigates the effect of social media on the lifestyle of students in Bamidele
Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti. Four objectives and
research questions were formulated for the study. Questionnaire were used to collect data from
the respondents. Data collected were analysed with frequency counts, mean and standard
deviation. The sample size of this study comprise (389) respondents determined by Taro
Yamane’s formula, which provides an efficient way to calculate sample sizes for large
population. It was discovered from the analysis that social media can have a beneficial role in
academic success, with many students finding it helpful in accessing academic resources, study
materials, and participating in group discussions. Using social media as a platform for
academic purposes, such as group chats or forums, can enhance learning outcomes by
fostering a collaborative environment where students exchange ideas and support each other.
The study recommended that government should promote social media platforms for academic
discussions and resource-sharing to make online time more productive. Institution
management should organize workshops on managing social media use to help students
maintain a balance between online and offline activities. Policy maker should establish
designated study times when students are encouraged to minimize social media use, potentially
improving focus and academic performance.
