Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study is on “Assessment of the Local Government as a Veritable Instrument for Grass Root Development Using Auchi Community as a case study”. The study has a population of 50 respondents, questionnaires were distributed to the respondents using simple random sampling technique. Analysis of the data was done using simple percentage and result presented in tables. The study made the following findings (i) the crises that bedeviled government in Nigeria from button to top and vice-versa are factors of the unbalance that exist amongst the three levels of government. (ii) The crises in the polity are intense because the functions of the local government have been hijacked by the federal and state government to a large extent, the local government are struggling to provide the mush needed development. The study concluded and made the following recommendations: (i) That local government should be detached from state to enable them have adequate autonomy. (ii) That since local government brings administration closer to the rural people, efforts should be made to sustain this institution. (iii) That the federal/state governments should make available enough funds to facilitate the mush sought grass root development.
