Influence of Elite on the Criminal Justice System of Nigeria, a Case Study of Ado - Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to examine the influence of elite on the criminal justice
system in Nigeria, with a focus on how elites interference afftects the fairness
and impartiality of judicial processes, contributes to systemic corruption and
impunity, and shapes public perception of justice delivery. The study
employed a mixed-method approach, using both qualitative and quantitative
data collection methods, including surveys and interviews, from a sample of
150 respondents. The respondents were drawn from key sectors such as law
enforcement, legal professionals, politicians, academics, businesspersons,
and the general public. The findings revealed that elites in Nigeria exert
significant influence on the criminal justice system through various
mechanisms, including financial resources, political connection and social
status. These forms of influence undermine the impartiality of the judicial
process and distort the principles of justice and fairness, with respondents
highlights instances where elites used their power to secure favorable legal
outcomes. Additionally, elite interference contributes to systemic corruption
and impunity, creating a culture where powerful individuals are often able to
escape legal consequence for criminal activities. Public perception of the
criminal justice system is also negatively impacted by elite influence, with
many respondents expressing a lack of trust in the system, which is seen as
compromised and unfair. The study highlighted the deep entrenchment of
elite influence in the Nigeria justice system and its implication for the rule of
law, judicial integrity, and public trust. The finding emphasized the urgent need
for reform in order to reduce elite interference, restore fairness and
accountability, and ensure that the criminal justice system operate without
bias or undue influence.
